  • Notes: Shirin Neshat’s 1999 Rapture series explores the dichotomy of gendered spaces and roles in the Islamic world. The series was initially presented as a dual, black-and-white projection physically dividing the depiction of women and men on separate walls. Neshat forcefully segregates the narratives of the genders by separating viewing fields for the spectator and codifying settings within the frame.

Shot in Morocco, architectural scenes serve as the backdrop for the structured yet mundane tasks of the men while scenes of nature engulf the women. “Neshat’s now gendered spaces suggest ready associations (woman=nature, man=culture) as well as contrasts—the men are symbolically entrenched in the tradition and authority of Islam, while the women are both protected and imprisoned by their traditional black veils, or chadors.”[1]

The gelatin silver print on offer depicts the women on the precipice of the unknown at the moment prior to “…six women board[ing] a rowboat and set[ting] off across an open sea, their destination—whether freedom, redemption, or martyrdom—is left undefined. Neshat sees the ending as a testament to the women’s adventurousness: ‘In opposition to the men, who stay within their inner boundaries, the women become very brave.’”[2]
