Samuel Clarke
CARTE DE VISITE OF CHILDREN WITH HAUDENOSAUNEE (IROQUOIS) BEADWORK, CA. 1860S

inscribed in pencil verso "Wiltens Children / with Iroqois Beaded Bag 1860s"; photographer's imprint reading "Photographed by Sam'l Clarke / This negative preserved."

Estimate: $400—600 CAD

  • Provenance: Gerry Biron Collection, Vermont, USA
    Private Collection, Ontario
  • Dimensions: overall 4 x 2.5 in — 10.2 x 6.4 cm
  • Medium: albumen print
  • Notes: Early images of Haudenoseone (Iroquois) beadwork are uncommon. This carte de visite is one of several important images in this auction showing beadwork in a setting contemporary to its manufacture.

This image of a young boy and his sister is identified on the rear of the photograph as “The Wiltens children”. The bead embellished bag held by the young girl in this image was made for sale or trade to Euro-Americans, and was manufactured by a Haudenoseone maker, likely in the area around Niagara Falls.

This carte de visite comes from the collection of Gerry Byron, author of the seminal texts on souvenir beadwork Made of Thunder, Made of Glass: American Indian Beadwork of the Northeast, and A Cherished Curiosity: The Souvenir Beaded Bag in Historic Haudenoseone (Iroquois) Art.
