  • Notes:

In 1874, at the age of 30, Léon-Augustin Lhermitte received his first medal at the Salon in Paris. His reputation as an artist was solidified in 1882 with the presentation of a key work at the Salon, which was later acquired by the French government for the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris. Lhermitte was part of the emerging Naturalist movement in France during the 1870s, which was a response against Romanticism and aligned with the Realist tradition of artists like Gustave Courbet and Jean-François Millet. Millet’s influence on Lhermitte was profound and can be traced in much of his work. As Lhermitte's career took off following this recognition, his success allowed him to continue painting in a Naturalist style, which found favor with a growing number of collectors. Art world figures, including Vincent Van Gogh and the influential art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel, also took note of Lhermitte’s approach to rural life.

Lhermitte’s pastel work was a defining feature of his production. Although pastel had fallen out of favour with artists since the 17th century, it enjoyed a revival in the 19th century, championed by figures like Degas, Redon, and the Impressionists. Pastel is made by mixing powdered pigments with a filler, such as kaolin or ground clay, and a binder that holds the pigments together. This medium allowed Lhermitte to capture fleeting moments of light and color without the meticulous process of oil painting. Lhermitte was so dedicated to this medium that he founded a group of artists called “Les Pastellistes” and helped train the next generation of young artists interested in pastel work.

Depicted here in pastel, The Chapel of the Grey Nuns or La Chapelle des Pénitents gris is located in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon in the South of France and considered a treasure of Baroque. It was later enlarged in 1758 by the architect Jean-Baptiste Franque.
