  • Provenance: Private Collection, British Columbia
  • Dimensions: 8 x 15.5 x 5 in — 20.3 x 39.4 x 12.7 cm
  • Medium: stone, ivory
  • Notes: The 1950s and early 60s saw a brief but remarkable flowering of art production in Salluit.[1] Despite the poor quality stone found in the region, Salluit contributed many of the great early achievements in twentieth century Inuit sculpture. Artworks from the region are often characterized by a subtle abstraction in the service of a pleasing composition, as in the present work by Annie Ikilluaq Saviakjuk. Although little information is readily available about the artist, or her husband and fellow sculptor Peter Tullaugaq, Saviakjuk was evidently an accomplished artist.

Narwhals do not often appear as subject matter in the art of Arctic Quebec in the 1950s and 60s, however Saviakjuk’s treatment of the subject skillfully articulates the creature’s immense weight and size.
