Description:

A Blue and White 'Jingdezhen' Vase, In the Style of 'The Vase Project' by Barbara Diduk and Zhao Yu

  • Notes: "The Vase Project: Made in China—Landscape in Blue" was conceived between 2004 and 2006 by ceramic artist and educator Barbara Diduk, Charles A. Dana Professor of Art at Dickinson College, in collaboration with Zhao Yu of the Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute. The project consisted of one hundred and one blue and white porcelain vases painted by artisans in Jingdezhen. Created during a period of rapid change in the region’s porcelain industry, the project documented a moment when factory-scale production continued to rely on hand painting and traditional firing methods, even as Jingdezhen transitioned into a global market economy.

Diduk and Zhao Yu selected vase painters from workshops, markets, and production sites throughout Jingdezhen. The first artist was asked to paint a contemporary landscape of the city incorporating its distinctive kiln stacks, after which each subsequent painter worked from the immediately preceding vase, interpreting rather than copying it. Each piece was painted and fired using the artist’s own materials and local kilns, resulting in variations of colour, technique, and style. Viewed together, the vases formed a sequential record of individual artistic responses to a shared subject, offering insight into contemporary ceramic practice in Jingdezhen and recognizing the largely anonymous artists who sustained its porcelain tradition.
